It doesn’t matter the level of your mixing ability if you can’t hear what’s wrong with your mixdown. When I started using Reference 4, I began noticing issues that I couldn’t even hear before.

The craziest thing about this software is that is actually works… really well. It comes with many different headphone profiles, and the Studio version comes with a microphone that will enable you to calibrate the Reference 4 software based on the frequency response of your studio monitors.Ī flat frequency response is desirable when mixing because it will minimize the number of issues that occur when transferring your mix to different speaker systems. Reference 4 by Sonarworks removes unwanted coloration from studio speakers and headphones, allowing you to achieve a flat frequency response. The best part about Backblaze is that it’s only $5/month, and well worth the peace of mind.Īvailable on: MacOS, Windows, and Linux 3. You can even back up your external hard drives to Backblaze thanks to there being no data upload limit. The only way to ensure complete backup security is by using an off-site backup server like Backblaze. I’m not sure how likely it is that someone is going to frag your studio with an EMP grenade, but if that happens, all of your electronics are toast, and your backups will be lost. If you back up your files to a local external hard drive, that’s great, but if someone steals it, those files are gone. Even if you back up your projects with an app like Splice, there are still countless other files on your computer that are valuable. Breaking your laptop, or having it stolen is the worst thing that can happen to you as a music producer. There’s no limit to the amount of data that you can back up. On a 5 star scale I give Quiztones a Yes.Backblaze allows you to back up your entire computer online. I think Quiztones could perhaps even be used in quickly testing out some new monitors or headphones. The app is robust, inexpensive, and does exactly what it set out to do with no fuss. Personally I think Quiztones is a must-buy, especially on iOS. To the credit of the app I was not discouraged, rather the ease of use and presentation are certainly encouraging. I found the gain quizzes pretty easy but once I tried the sine wave and frequency gain tests I was put in my place. I think this app is a fantastic little resource especially for someone like me who did not get formal training in anything electronic in college. The interface is very simple and understandable, this is perhaps due to the app also being available on iOS. In essence you listen to sine waves and guess the frequency, listen to loops and guess the gain, or listen to loops and guess the frequency gain.

Quiztones uses tones and frequency-altered noise and musical loops (including source material from your own music library) to train your ears and help develop more acute listening and frequency recognition skills.

Quiztones is a frequency ear trainer for amateur and professional audio engineers, producers, and musicians. A bit of background on the app from the Audiofile Engineering site: I recently sat down and played with the OS X version of Quiztones the other day and had a blast.
